Too Faced Eyeshadow Palettes: Chocolate Gold

I went years without lifting a finger or even coming close to purchasing a Too Faced eyeshadow palette, but after snagging the original Chocolate Bar palette for $25 at Sephora it’s been all downhill. I love the quality and shade selection of Too Faced’s Chocolate Bar and scented palette collection. Ulta recently offered a 35% discount on a limited selection of Too Faced palettes, so of course I had to take advantage. I added the delicious and rich Chocolate Gold palette to my collection and couldn’t be happier.  Continue reading “Too Faced Eyeshadow Palettes: Chocolate Gold”

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette- Initial Thoughts

Sephora’s Memorial Day Sale included some products that simply NEVER go on sale. Of these, the Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette was knocked down 50% to $25USD. Having wanted this for so long, I didn’t hesitate before adding it to my cart. I wanted to share my initial thoughts on this gorgeous neutral palette as soon as possible because I am so smitten with it!

THOUGHTS

  1. Scent – Can I just start by talking about how this smells like a legitimate chocolate bar? It’s a very appreciated little detail, but it’s not overwhelming. If you’re sensitive to scent, you may not like this part of it, but I personally don’t think it’s enough of a fragrance to be irritating.
  2. Color Range – This palette kills it as far as color range. It has so many great neutral shades with pops of warm reds, burgundies, khakis, and purples. I find the shade range to be similar to the Urban Decay Naked palette, but Chocolate Bar is much more wearable. There are much better neutral matte shadows for blending, plus gorgeous shimmer shades. It seems as though the colors are much more cohesive.
  3. Pigmentation – The colors overall are hit-or-miss. Most of the matte shades are excellent; they are buildable, smooth, and can pack a punch. The shimmer shades are buttery and easy to build up. Where this palette falls short on pigmentation is in the purple shades; they lack pigmentation and vibrancy, applying patchy.
  4. Shadow Quality – Upon first swatch, these shadows seem powdery. I was afraid they might be chalky! Despite this strange texture in the pan, they apply beautifully to the eyelids. The mattes and the shimmer shades perform so well. As I mentioned in the previous point, the violet shades are definitely a miss. They can be used as blending shades or in small areas, but they’re not standouts.
  5. Versatility – The shade and texture range in this shadow collection makes it very versatile. Yes, it’s mostly neutral, but the pops of color and spectrum of light-to-dark shades make this a day-to-day, smokey eye, and statement palette all in one. You can go warm, neutral, or cool with this, too. I think the best part is the wide assortment of mattes and shimmers.

What do you think of this palette? So far, I am very much loving it! It’s awakened my love for creating eyeshadow looks again; I can’t wait to keep digging into it.

I’m thinking of doing a comparison post between TF Chocolate Bar and UD Naked — comment below if you’d be interested in seeing this!

Summer Beauty Essentials

Summer is almost here. With the warmer weather and brighter sunshine, I like to keep my makeup routine short and sweet. In addition to being simple, I want my makeup to last all day long so that I don’t find myself touching up or checking the mirror every few minutes. Here are my go-to products for a no-thought, lazy girl look.

TOO FACED PEACHES AND CREAM

This has to be about the 100000th time I’ve mentioned this line of products. Firstly, the packaging makes me swoon. More importantly, however, the products all work together to give me a beautifully soft complexion that does not BUDGE. I won’t exaggerate in my claims – the foundation alone will last all day long without breaking up or getting oily, but pair it with the primer, setting powder, and setting spray for makeup that will last all WEEK long.

If I had to pick just the bare essentials from this collection, I would have to go with the foundation and setting powder. These two are phenomenal on their own; I’ve used the foundation with other setting powders and the setting powder with other foundations. In every case, my makeup stays fresher and lasts longer.

summer beauty benefit hoola bronzer

GIVE ME SOME COLOR

Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer is my favorite matte bronzer. Just a little of this swept onto the perimeters of my face adds warmth, dimension, and tiny rays of emanating sunshine. It’s never patchy, either, so it just looks effortless on my skin.

I’ve also raved about the Multisticks from BITE Beauty about a hundred times. The shade Cashew is ideal for quickly adding a flush to the cheeks, color to the lips, and just a little life to the eyelids. What I love about the matte formula is that it’s extremely long-lasting, yet the cream formula makes it sink into the skin for a natural look. Easy, simple, and impactful. That’s my kind of product.

Summer Glow – ft. Anastasia Beverly Hills

I firmly believe in having a formula for creating the perfect summer glow. For me, it starts with a smooth base. From there, I build up by adding in a warm glow, luminous blush, clean brow, full lash, and healthy lip color. Is it a lot? I don’t know; it may seem meticulous, but I love being able to complement my complexion using shade and light.

THE BASE

My favorite smoothing foundation is the Too Faced Peach Perfect Comfort Matte foundation. With a Beauty Blender or other makeup sponge, it just creates the most soft focus (and comfortable) finish. I like to set it with the Peach Perfect Setting Powder to really lock it in and further blur any imperfections.

To add a bit of dimension, I like to use a fluffier brush to apply Benefit’s Hoola matte bronzer on the perimeters of my face.

THE GLOW

Processed with VSCO with al3 preset

I love a warm glow. The shade “Lyra” from the ABH Aurora Glow Kit imparts the most ethereal creamsicle – pink crystalline highlight, really blending effortlessly into the skin. I dusted this onto the high points of my cheeks, my hose, and cupid’s bow, and applied with a damp brush to the inner corners of my eyes.

I also sheered out Primavera from the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette, along with Antique Bronze and some of the matte orange shades. I wanted to keep the eyes soft, blown out, and open.

THE LUMINOUS COLOR

Processed with VSCO with al3 preset

I kept the eyes fairly neutral, but definitely on the warmer orange side.

The flush of vibrant pink on my cheeks was created by applying the Becca Luminous Blush in Camellia with a damp Beauty Blender. This application sheered out the pigmentation, but made the bright pink color blend right into my skin. It faded into Lyra beautifully.

On my lips, I kept it simple and went with a killer formula for a healthy lip vibe. The Bite Beauty Matte Lip Crayon in Glace was perfect for adding a pop of color to complete the look.

TIE IT ALL TOGETHER

IMG_7612_Facetune_22-05-2018-10-02-57

Two cornerstones of every makeup look: clean, full brows and voluminous lashes.

Using the ABH Brow Definer in Dark Brown, I easily added shape and volume to my brows. The thicker triangular tip makes full, clean brows a breeze to create.

I curled my lashes to prime them for a wide-open eye look. The best curl-holding mascara I have is L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise in Waterproof, so I like to use this as my base for building a nice lash look. To add even more length, volume, and black, I finished with a few coats of Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara on my top and bottom lashes.

What do you think of this “formula” for a summer glow? Do you have any tips for playing up your complexion in a natural look?

5 Underwhelming Beauty Products

Raise your hand if you’ve purchased a hyped up makeup product and have been utterly disappointed. If you haven’t raised your hand, I assume you are just a very positive person who is generally not disappointed with anything. Let’s be real — makeup is very personal; what works for one person is entirely dependent on their preferences, skin type, lifestyle, or whatever. Just because a product works for someone else does not mean it will work for you and vice versa. Here are five products that have recently really underwhelmed me. These are not by any means bad products, they just aren’t for me!

disappointing makeup urban decay palette eyeshadow

URBAN DECAY NAKED EYESHADOW PALETTEurban decay naked eyeshadow palette

I’ll admit – this was my first eyeshadow palette EVER. It was everyone’s favorite for a while, quite frankly because it was one of the first palettes really marketed as a multi-use, everyday, and wearable palette. I love the shadows, have no complaints about the formula, and enjoy the simple packaging, but I find myself struggling to get any use of it now that it’s pretty much been sitting in my drawer for years.

I think a lot of the reason for me not reaching for this is the shade selection. Not only are there WAY too many shimmer shades, but the overall tone of this palette is very cool. I’ve learned that cooler colors don’t flatter me the same way that more warm ones do. That being said, I’ll hold onto this for a while because I absolutely love Sidecar and Toasted.

TOO FACED BETTER THAN SEX MASCARAToo Faced better than sex mascara

This mascara was SO hyped up. So many girls name this as their absolute holy grail, and being a mascara junkie myself, I had to give it a shot. I’ll admit that my lashes are not the greatest on their own, but I usually am able to get really nice results with most mascaras if I curl them.

While this mascara gives great volume and a nice black color, it does nothing in terms of curl or length for my lashes. Even when I use an eyelash curler, this formula is very liquidy and just weighs them down. For the price, I don’t get the hype, especially when there are gems like the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise at the drugstore for less than 10 bucks. If this works for you, I’m so jealous, but I think I’ll stick to my drugstore mascaras from now on!

NARS RADIANT CREAMY CONCEALER (TRAVEL SIZE)nars radiant creamy concealer

I’m so glad I only picked up the travel size of this concealer. I have friends who swear up and down that this concealer is the one, but it just didn’t work for me. I have finicky dry undereyes that crease and flake like crazy without the right products, so I was hopeful by the concealer’s namesake. Unfortunately, this formula was much too drying and just accentuated my fine lines. It did give a nice brightening effect, though!

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS LIQUID LIPSTICK (SARAFINE)anastasia beverly hills liquid lipstick matte sarafine

With so many great matte liquid lipstick formulas on the market, it’s tough to justify luxury prices for mediocre products. While I love the color of this gorgeous deep red, I’m disappointed in how drying the ABH formula is. I have another beautiful liquid lipstick from the brand in a stunning light lilac color and the formula is the same. I wish these weren’t so drying and crackly, because the colors are drop dead gorgeous.

CHOSUNGAH 22 SO TINY LIP & CHEEK TINT (NEON APPLE)lip and cheek tint red

This product was disappointing to me mostly due to the color. I love multi-use products like this because I appreciate the ability to customize my makeup, but the bright red color was just really unflattering on my skin color. It was so red that it made my skin look like I had an allergic reaction, so unfortunately I’m passing on this one.

I know these products are well-loved by many, so it pains me to be on the opposite side of the fence with my opinion! Let me know if you like any of these products — maybe I’m using them wrong?

What are your most disappointing beauty products?

Easy Disco Eye Makeup Look – Night Out Beauty

I used to have such a hard time deciding how to do my makeup when going out for a night. The two trends I fluctuated between were smokey eyes and bold lips, but that gets kind of old after a while. Here’s a crazy easy disco-worthy look that’ll turn heads but still get you out of the door in a reasonable time!

Focus on the Eyes

Offbeat Disco Eye Makeup

I’m so into the look of a bold shadow as a graphic wing. It’s simple, it’s customizable, and it’s so beautiful!

With the help of some MAC Fix + spray, I turned the foiled shadow in shade “Trance” from the Tarte Make Believe In Yourself Palette into the perfectly creamy product to glide onto my lids.

You can play around with the types of product you use (hello Stila Glitter + Glow liquid eyeshadows!), the colors, and the shapes until you find something that works for you.

Silver Disco Eye Makeup

I kept it simple with clean brows and a generous coat of Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara. I then brightened up the inner corner using the highlight shade “Believe” from the same Tarte palette.

Ready, Set, GLOW

Metallic Eyeshadow Beauty Look

With the focus being on your head-turning eyeshadow, keep the rest of your face glowy and natural.

I used my favorite long-lasting foundation combo: Too Faced Peach Perfect foundation, setting powder, and primer. This locks in a base that’ll stay in place all night.

To add some dimension, I reached for my favorite non-matte bronzers in the Tarte Tarteist Contour Palette Vol. 3. I wouldn’t describe these as “shimmery,” but they have a radiant finish that is sparkle-free. My favorite nude blush is Tarte paaarty, so I applied a generous amount to my cheeks, blending up to my temples to keep things looking seamless.

The finishing touch for the skin is definitely a cool crystal glow. In the Tarte Make Believe In Yourself palette, the center highlight shade “Believe” is an amazing opal glow that really looks ethereal on warmer skin tones. I love highlight shades with multiple colored undertones in them because they add a subtle complexity when the light hits them.

My lips are about as nude and simple as can be — my favorite pinky nude shade is NARS Lip Gloss in Chelsea Girls. While the color is also perfect, I love the formula. NARS glosses are pigmented, creamy, and nourishing without the uncomfortable stickiness.

Would you wear this look for your girls’ night out? I love disco-inspired and mod looks. I especially love making them easy to recreate and wearable!
