Clearing Acne with Sensitive Skin – NOT IMPOSSIBLE

If you have the trifecta of troublesome skin — acne-proneness, sensitivity, and oiliness — I feel your pain.  A lot of skincare products marketed towards acne-prone skin are just way too harsh, and honestly very ineffective. After going in for a facial about a year ago, my esthetician recognized all of my problems and recommended an effective skincare regimen for both treating my acne and controlling my oil while maintaining my skin’s balance. Are you intrigued yet?

Avenue USA
My first encounter with Avène was while I was studying abroad in Belgium my junior year of college (best time of my life btw!). For whatever reason, my skin was constantly reacting to the new environment and hard water, unleashing a legion of angry rashes and irritations. It got to the point where I walked into a pharmacy and, in broken French, begged the ladies to show me a product that would soothe and heal my face. They looked at me like I was crazy, looked at my skin with sympathy, and immediately turned to retrieve this miracle product.

The Avène Tolérance Extrême Mask is a little pricey, but it just calms your skin upon impact. It brings your hydration levels back to normal without making you feel greasy! I brought this little tube with me EVERYWHERE, and I’m convinced it was the only thing that held me over until I returned stateside.

Back to the original point of this post. That whole semester abroad really messed with my skin. After the rashes healed, my acne started flaring up horribly. I also started getting really congested and my pores came out to play big time. Wearing foundation made me feel so much worse because it just emphasized all of the bumps on my skin. I tried a lot of things, from strong face washes to layers of benzoyl peroxide treatment, but everything was irritating my skin. Waving the white flag, I made an appointment for a facial, thinking it would provide temporary relief and maybe reveal some new information. The facial was amazing and my esthetician took the time to ask me questions and explain what she was doing. She gave me truthful advice, much of what has led me to finding the perfect regimen for my skin today. Upon leaving, she gave me a sample set of the Avène Cleanance line (which she had used on my skin at the end of the facial). I was already familiar with the brand from my study away experience from Hell. I knew Avène was clean, hypoallergenic, and effective, so I happily tried out these products. What I enjoyed most about this line, aside from its effectiveness, was its simplicity. The gel face wash is gentle, but still deep-cleansing. It’s perfect for oily-skinned folks like me! After I washed my face, I applied the Cleanance Mat Mattifying Toner with a cotton pad as a toning treatment and really let that sink into my skin. This is one of the few blemish treatments that don’t dry my complexion out. The final step in the very short regimen is the lotion, which is hydrating but very very light. I only used this in the day under my makeup and opted for a more intense hydrating cream from First Aid Beauty as a nighttime moisturizer.

If you stick to this routine, you will see results in time. I wish I had pictures of my skin after studying abroad, but I deleted all of the bad ones because I couldn’t stand to look at it. A clearer complexion is a patient progress, especially if you do it the right way. The right way is to steer clear of anything that will irritate your skin, because that just aggravates the problem that you’re trying to solve. I like to run my products through — if there are no acne-causing/irritating ingredients, I feel so much more comfortable with applying them to my face. I did the work for you and the Avène Cleanance line checks in with no known acne-causing ingredients or irritants.
